Labia

The labia protect the vaginal opening. Every woman has 2 outer labia and 2 inner labia.

See for yourself

Labia look different in each woman. Some women have large labia; others have smaller ones. Hair (called pubic hair) grows on the outer labia. The inner labia are between the outer labia. They are a slightly darker color.

Small or large?

In the past, the outer labia were called the large labia. The inner labia were called the small labia. But those names caused confusion. The inner labia are actually larger than the outer labia. That’s why we now say: inner and outer labia.

Wash them but don’t use soap

Wash the labia with lukewarm water. Don’t use soap, that can cause itching, irritation, yeast infections and pain during sex.

Breasts

You develop breasts during puberty. This could start in a girl of 8, but also in a girl of 14. Age varies for all girls

Menstruation

During puberty, a girl has her first period. For about 5 days, some blood, mixed with mucus, flows from your vagina. You can use tampons, sanitary pads or cups to soak up the blood and mucus.
